Hi Mohan

Excellent effort from you man. Keep it up.
I learnt a lot from users feedback and so will you in the due course. When I started this blog, I started writing papers on some complex solutions that I had implemented, without touching the basics. Then some readers demanded the basics, and obliged.

Hence my advice to you is, tell your readers in BOLD that their Feedback is important. Find out from your readers what are the hindrances that they face to get started. No one can guide you better than your own readers.

You are doing good work for a good cause, so keep it going !

Thanks
Anil

OA Framework is java based. Hence firstly you need to get onto the right JDK version i.e. 1.3 or higher[applicable for 11.5.10]

Also ideally you should install JDBC Driver 9.2.0.6 for increased stablity of OA Framework[See Metalink Note 164317.1]

There is a very comprehensive & dedicated Metalink Note 275874.1 [Oracle Application Framework Configuration Notes Release 11i (11.5.10)]. This Metalink Note contains all the pre-reqs, interoperability patches & config steps.

System Administrator Reponsibility -> Workflow>>Administrator Workflow >>Notifications form

The form function name is WF_ADMIN_NOTIFICATIONS

however, to know the MDS document, you can click on Personalize to get the path

Scope Page: /oracle/apps/fnd/wf/worklist/webui/AdminNotificationsPG
Document Name /oracle/apps/fnd/wf/worklist/webui/AdminNotificationsPG

vi $FND_TOP/mds/wf/worklist/webui/AdminNotificationsPG.xml

Here you will see that
^M

Now, you need to go to Java Top to find your classes & XML in below locations

Your Application Module is in
$JAVA_TOP/oracle/apps/fnd/wf/worklist/server/NotificationsAM.xml

Your controller class is
$JAVA_TOP/oracle/apps/fnd/wf/worklist/webui/NotificationsPageCO.class

You should extend and not customize your OA Framework.
You should be able to FTP all these OAF files to jDev and work directly from jDev

Hi Sri,

Indeed there is no Key Flex on po_headers.
There is no reason that I am aware of I am afraid.

I think this is legacy, during very earlier versions of Oracle Financials, they might have decided to allow KeyFlexfield, to capture Organization Name, PO Type etc as a part of PO-Number itself. Thereafter, Oracle created Composite Unique index on Segment1[po-number],org_id & type_lookup_code. Hence they decided to backtrack from a KFF on PO-Number....

Above is not a statement of facts, but merely my understanding.

THanks,
Anil Passi

There is no reason that I am aware of I am afraid.

I think this is legacy, during very earlier versions of Oracle Financials, they might have decided to allow KeyFlexfield, to capture Organization Name, PO Type etc as a part of PO-Number itself. Thereafter, Oracle created Composite Unique index on Segment1[po-number],org_id & type_lookup_code. Hence they decided to backtrack from a KFF on PO-Number....

Above is not a statement of facts, but merely my understanding.

THanks,
Anil Passi

Hi Santhos

Indeed you can, but not all reports will work out of the box when switched to XML Publisher.
I think format triggers do not get executed when concurrent manager runs a rdf file for XML output. Understandably oracle expects you to define your formatting inside XML Publisher itself.

Hi Anil,

I have a doubt in Oracle Reports?
I am using Reports 6i.
I am working on Invoice Report. My requirment is if the output is within a page then there is no need to print the page number or else need to print it. How can we achieve this?

I tried using the Total Physical pages, but i could not refer in conditional format trigger. Could you please help me in achieving this?

Hi Santosh,

I vaguely remember that you will need to create a summary column for page number, reset at appropriate level, and then use format trigger to hid/display.

Its been six year since I did any professional work on developing reports. Hence my statement may not be accurate.

Hi Anil,

If possible, can you plese explain the basic fundamentals about apps tables and busines. For example, consider from customer placing an order, and finally ending with collecting the payements, receipts,invoice etc.,...Also, what kind of information is stored in what tables and what columns. What are the mostl frequently used tables and columns that are being used. If you can explain with a real time scenario, that would be very useful.

Hi Shell,

You need to become a good Oracle Apps consultant, regardless of TEchnical or Functional Consultant.

I suggest, you pick up a module of your choice, and try to run end to end process. For example from Payables invoice, to invoice payment batches, Accounting, transfer to GL, posting to GL, and seeing those entries in GL balances.

This is just an example. Next you can expand the scope of your steps, and start from purchasing requisition, to approval, to Purchase Order to its receipt and then transferring all to GL. Next you can create an invoice and match the same to Purchasing.

I am trying to say, first step, UNDERSTAND HOW THE ORACLE APPS SYSTEM WORKS.

Once you have done so, then you can take the next step by setting up a new GL Set of Book, new Multi Org Organizations, new responsibility, new setup for that Org and GL SOB. And then setup module specific entities. Once you have done your own setup, try running end to end process again on your config data.

All this is hard work, but so goes life.

Thanks,

Murugiah,

I am afraid I do not have QandA for SCM.

User,
Are you changing the value of any database field in Post-Query? If so, you need to use set the record back to Status_query [immediately after assigning values in post-query]. Use set_record_property for this purpose, and use :system.trigger_record for the current record being referenced in post-query

Hi Anil,
Like many others I am an Oracle developer trying to get in to apps, for that your site is great help. I am sort of trying to get back door entry into apps, as there is not really need for another apps developer in our team. So I am writing Business Objects reports against OLM.
So now question I have is - on a self service screen how to find what table is getting used. E.g. under learning administrator (OLM) if I am creating a new category how can I find out in which table data is going? Is there any thing similar to forms based screen like Record History for Self service page?

Akash,
In answer to your question, you should set the Diagnostics profile to Yes, following which you will find a link named About This Page. When you click on this link, you will see the view object name on which the screen is based. Open the VO file either in jDev or in $JAVA_TOP xml to see the SQL Query used. Please note the VO where clause might be modified with additional conditions in the processRequest of the controller.

Hi AY

The best way to approach the market is to be prepared for most possible skillsets, that which are commonly used in most projects.

Examples are:-
1. Interfaces using API and interface tables
2. Concurrent programs of type pl/sql to create processes
3. Workflow modifications and creating Workflows from scratch
4. CUSTOM.pll
5. Forms Personalizations
6. Self Service personalizations and framework concepts
7. some data migration examples
8. workflow business events

If you can try couple of in each of the categories, then I can say you are prepared for it. It might take you long time to get the job, but then it also means you get long time to learn and experiment these things.

also, look at forums.oracle.com and see the kind of questions people are raising there, its a nice place to learn about practical problems that people face and also their resolution. so do as much reading as possible on the forum

good luck

Hi Braja

The valueset name used will depend upon how you wish to validate the parameter selection values.

In case, you want to restrict your user to enter either Yes[Y] or No[N] into a parameter, then the value set attached will be FND_YES_NO

Before you learn Oracle Financials, try to navigate through the various screens/business processes to get familiar with the Architecture.

Make a start with GL module, and then Payables integrating to GL.

Hi Lucky

To get started, I suggest you take a course on Fundamentals of Oracle Applications.

Just the fundamentals, on architecture.
Oracle Applications is more about the methodology, than about technology. You can learn technology from otn and books and self-practice, but you will require some guidance to understand the basic concepts of Oracle Applications

Hi Anil,
I am using your blog since quite a long time for my knowledge upgradation.
I am working in oracle apps since then 3 years,

Though most of the people i know work in different implementation projects but i have doubt that how a new company which is planning to implement ERP will freeze a particular ERP package i.e whether company should go for oracle apps or SAP, I have never worked in SAP but I suppose that 80-90 % processes of any discreet manufacturing industry can be mapped in either SAP or Oracle apps therefore only thing of prime importance left is money.
How is the cost comparison done of different ERP packages, The cost of implementing any ERP package includes One time & repetitive cost, One time cost is the initial cost incurred in implementation, training etc. Repetitive cost is the license fees, fee for future customizations etc.

Can u suggest me any resource where i can get a detailed idea for parameters of cost comparison for different ERP's.

Hi Mandev

Costs depends on your implementation strategy.
Costs can be kept down by involving as much of your permanent staff as possible in the Business Analysis roles. In your location, you should compare the hourly wage for SAP and Oracle consultants. That will give you a fair idea of which ERP implementation will be C***per.

Keeping money aside, Oracle is pushing for open standards. Oracle's BPEL is much more powerful that SAP's netweaver.

FMW[FUsion middleware] will provide your organization scalability both within and outwards[integration with trading partners], as the company grows.

Having open standard technologies will keep the technical costs lowers in the longer run.
Hence Oracle is my choice

Anil

Hi Tony

For performance reasons Oracle does not use Foreign Keys in EBS.
Hence there isn't a need for primary keys either.

The net effect of Unique Key and Primary Key is the same.

Hi Subb,

There are two ways by which you can debug a report in APPS[assuming its deployed on server].
1. run trace. you can turn the tracing on in concurrent program definition.
after the tracing has been turned on, you can simply check the trace file to see the sql
2. pur srw2.message, these will be visible in the log file of the report

In order to debug report on PC, using D2k, simply use the D2k debugger.

Thanks

Hi Anil
I have some issues while adding code in CUSTOM.pll
Please refer to the explanation below:
Subsmilies/cheesy.gifeselecting a line on Autocreate Form through CUSTOM.pll

I have written code to customize the Autocreate form. In this form only the valid lines (validity is checked based on certain conditions) should get selected when I check the checkbox corresponding the requisition line.

For deselecting the line I have written the code:

if (invalidity_condition is TRUE for a line) then
copy('N', 'REQ_LINES.SELECT_LINE');
end if;

But through this code only the checkbox is deselected and not the lines.
The lines remains selected because it remains highlighted in yellow color. Also when I press Autocreate button these lines appear on Purchase Order form.

Please guide me how to do this ..as I am a fresher in Oracle Apps/CUSTOM.pll
Please reply to this asap..

Shweta

Hi Vivek

I am sorry if I have ever unknowingly advised against taking up functional role.

In fact one of my friends from Tech background[from REC] is one of the highest paid Functional consultants in Europe.

Payroll functional role will also involve some mathematics, when you design your Fast Formulaes.

It is a good opportunity, I would have taken this role if I were to be in your position.

Dear Anil,

First of all I have to thank you for doing such a wonderful job on taking out the time and starting this initiative.

I have been struggling to get information on the Oracle financials (functional) and how to go about it. Infact I have too much information in the way of manuals and presentations. There is lot available on the technical front and there is not always a good demarkation to add to the confusion.
I would like to know if you have any particular blog or are you planning to put together something specifically for Oracle Financials (functional) students.

Once again, good job!

Hi Sandy

If the sole purpose if to separate the Employee Data, then simply create these two as HRMS Organizations. No need to make them Legal Entity, as these both fall under same tax legislation and also share the same Flex. All you want is different cost centre for each of them, that can be achieved by creating two different organizations.

Usually, HRMS Organizations are mapped to Cost Centres.

Having created the two organizations, you can create two different Security profiles, and attach these Org's to respective security Profiles.

A user's access will be associated to a HRMS Security Profile, for HRMS Responsibilities. Hence the data security/visiblility will be controlled.

Thanks,
Anil Passi

written by rsl , December 21, 2007
Hi Anil,
thanks for providing useful materials.
i developed a form, o/p shd display empno,ename.
empno having lov.

first i have created record grp manually as below:
ITEM:Empno
TRIGGER:When-New-Item-Instance

declare
rg_name varchar2(30):='XRECGRP';
rg_id recordgroup;
errcode number;
begin
rg_id:=find_group(rg_name);
if id_null(rg_id) then
rg_id:=create_group_from_query (rg_name,'select empno from emp');
end if;
ERRCODE:=POPULATE_GROUP (RG_ID);
end;

next i created lov at design time(option:manually)name:lov8.
(i didn't change any property)becouse i'm setting recgrp to lov using set_lov_property

in same above code i changed as
declare
lov_result boolean;
rg_name varchar2(30):='XRECGRP';
rg_id recordgroup;
errcode number;
begin
rg_id:=find_group(rg_name);
if id_null(rg_id) then
rg_id:=create_group_from_query(rg_name,'select empno from emp');
end if;
ERRCODE:=POPULATE_GROUP(RG_ID);
set_lov_property ('lov',GROUP_NAME,'XRECGRP');
lov_result:=show_lov('lov8');
end;

it showing errror as:
FRM-30048: Unable to find record group .
LOV LOV8
Form: XFORM_RGRP_LOV
FRM-30085: Unable to adjust form for output.

In Code i have attach record grp to lov(using set_lov_property) why its not taking.

if that lov already consists another record grp then it is setting rec grp used in set_lov_property.i don't want like that.plz ans me.
and is there any way to create lov manually(using code) or we have create at design time only(using create button)

Hi Anil,

This example suggests what my actual doubt is.

While pick Releasing Sales Orders, a single move order header number is assigned for the lines belongs to different Sales Orders.

My Requirement is to get a distinct move order numbers for the lines belongs to different Sales Orders.

Please suggest me if this is possible or not.

error is-->

table in Package GMI_ITEM_PVT Procedure insert_ic_item_mst
when i try to find out the solution related with this error,

Hi Sushil

These are Key Flexfields.
For a Key Flexfield, if Dynamic Insertion is not allowed[as per KFF setup], then you must create a combination before using it.

Hence in this case, you need to go to Position Screen and create your Position combination

Shipping Execution API
written by Begins , April 25, 2008
Hi Anil,

I was searching for some info on Shipping execution APIs .
Our company is now working with a logistics system to deliver our finished goods to the customers. So the logistics system will be acting as a warhouse where they would store our finished goods and ship them on demand.

In this process, when they ship the goods, all shipping information will be taken care of by their custom application. They will just send an ASN which holds the shipping info and they want us to send the ASNs to the customers in the customer specific format.

So in the above step, while theysend the ASN, we would like to load all that data into our Oracle ERP using the shipping execution APIs. I would like to know on how this can be implemented.how should I run the APIs , and how can I run all these shipping APIs as as a set and what is the process flow to use each API in this case? I mean in what order these APIs must be run?

Could you please put some light into this?

Thanks in advance.

Particularly, I am fascinated to work in both areas. Can I find any jobs like that??

Is there any added advantage if an apps developer has java back ground ?

Is there any work that can be done only by an expert in both the fields, etc?

I dont know any thing about apps, your answer will be appreciated.

Hi Saddy

These days more and more things are being done in Java in Apps, but not everything yet.
In Fusion Apps, Java/XML guys will rule the tech stack.

But for now, and new 3-4yrs, you will need to pickup other toolsets knowledge too, like workflows & of course pl/sql.

However, the most important thing remains, is to understand the Oracle Apps Architecture.
Apps in its current form will continue to be used for approx 10yrs, as there will be a mix of customers using Fusion Apps and Oracle Apps

Thanks,
Anil

My problem is , I can choose either to go to Apps Technical or to Apps DBA since my current profile includes a bit of both.
I am confused as to take which career path. I enjoy coding but at the same time i dont have any problems with DBA work.
Only problem is that i hate shifts.

Change LOV using FP
written by Venkat , May 15, 2008
I'm trying to chang the lov(supplier name) on the form APXVDMVD (N)Purchasing super user-->supplybase-->supplier-->find supplier form.
The lov on supplier name field (QF_VENDORS_BY_NAME) currently has 4 columns(supplier name, number, taxpayerId and tax registration number)
I want to add a new column Inactive on Date.
I tried to doing the following
1.Create record group from query
select vendor_name,segment1,num_1099, vat_registration_num,vendor_id, end_active_date from po_vendors order by upper(vendor_name)
2.Attached new record group to LOV
Now I get an error FRM-41826: cannot replace group; columns don’t match lov.
I modified the query and followed the same steps
1.Create record group from query
select vendor_name,segment1,num_1099, to_char(end_date_active, 'DD-MON-YYYY') vat_registration_num,vendor_id, from po_vendors order by upper(vendor_name)
2.Attached new record group to LOV
Now the LOV looks like this
Supplier NameNumberTaxpayerIDTaxRegistrationNum
Abc12345612-Apr-2005
Xyz88755621-Dec-2002

Questions:
Is there any way I can add an extra column to the LOV using FP?
Is there any way I can change the heading of the existing column (in this case TaxRegistrationNum to InactiveOn)?

Thank you,
Venkat.

Refreshing eBusiness Center grid via personalization
written by Richard D. Chisnick , May 30, 2008
Hello Anil,

I am posting to this section since I can not post to the appropriate blog. My apologies.

Hopefully, you can help me come up with a solution for a problem I'm having. I am trying to create a menu item that 'refreshes' NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST, the grid under the Note tab on the eBusiness Center form (ASTRCALL). I thought that JTF_GRID.REFRESH('NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST') would be the appropriate BuiltIn (built in Type Call Custom Library) to use for the menu. I put the "JTF..." procedure as the argument, and this does not work. I also tried using 'Execute a Procedure' instead, but this also did not work.

After failing with using BuiltIn, I tried using the Property type instead of BuiltIn type. My plan was to use two steps: first clear the grid, and then repopulate it. I wanted to see if there was a way I could just set the value of NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST to NULL, but this did not clear the grid.

This is proving to be very difficult for me, and any advice on this would be appreciated.

eBusiness Center grid refresh resolved - in case anyone could find it useful
written by Richard D. Chisnick , October 01, 2008
So here's what I ended up doing:

First thing to know - the requirement was to toggle a filter on NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST. The filter displays only one type of Note. So, I was never supposed to clear this grid. Without looking at the details of the JTF_GRID package, I would imagine there is a simple function there that would do this should you require it.

Elements:

1) 2 menu items that get created on the WHEN-NEW-FORM-INSTANCE trigger. "Show -specific- notes only" and "Clear -specific- notes filter". I set up two lines in the personalization for these menu items. Each used an Action type of Menu. I used menu entries Special12 and Special14. This was the "shell" of the solution, and the easy part.

2) Here was the tricky part: I edited CUSTOM.pll, adding these two IF statements within the humongous "event" procedure:

-- show specific notes only
IF event_name = 'SPECIAL12' AND form_name = 'ASTRCALL' THEN

-- set values for start and end dates (assumed that you add these variables at the top of the file)
l_start := name_in('NOTE_BALI_DATES.START_DATE');
l_end := name_in('NOTE_BALI_DATES.END_DATE');

-- created a WHERE clause string here (assumed that this variable is declared)
l_where := (here, you include NOTE_TYPE_MEANING, OBJECT_ID, and ENTERED_DATE in the range between l_start and l_end)

-- grid init
jtf_grid.init('NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST','AST_NOTES_GRID');

-- finally, apply the filter
jtf_grid.setCharProperty('NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST', jtf_grid_property.WHERE_CLAUSE, l_where);

END IF;

-- remove the specific notes filter
IF event_name = 'SPECIAL14' AND form_name = 'ASTRCALL' THEN

-- set values for start and end dates (assumed that you add these variables at the top of the file)
l_start := name_in('NOTE_BALI_DATES.START_DATE');
l_end := name_in('NOTE_BALI_DATES.END_DATE');

-- HERE is the MAJOR difference....
l_where := (its the same as before, except you DO NOT include NOTE_TYPE_MEANING)

-- grid init
jtf_grid.init('NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST','AST_NOTES_GRID');

-- finally, apply the filter
jtf_grid.setCharProperty('NOTE_BALI.NOTE_BST', jtf_grid_property.WHERE_CLAUSE, l_where);

END IF;

re: Screen Getting Locked when two users update the same record in custom form
written by kirubanandh , February 15, 2009
Hi Anil,

The material which u have are really amazing and very useful to many oracle guys.
I have an issue.
We designed many custom forms and in that when two users try to update a single record the screen gets locked for the second user and the system just hangs.
I have not noticed this kind of a behaviour in any of the apps standard forms.
I am creating the block based on the table.But I have seen in standard forms the blocks are based on views.
Will this problem go away if the datablock is created based on a view.
Please advice.

Thanks

You need to write a code into ON-LOCK Trigger for that block.
One quick way is to open a CURSOR with FOR UPDATE CLAUSE with the WHERE CLAUSE containing a condition to identify the current record via :block.primary_key field.

cursor c1 is select * from po_headers_all where po_header_id = :po_block.po_header_id for update of po_header_id;
Next-open and immediately close the cursor.

If the record was to be locked by some other user, then you will get a LOCK error straightaway

Another option is the lock error with re-try option, as per standard screens. For that option copy paste the code from ON-LOCK trigger of a standard screen

re: Problem in using fndload in fnd_request.submit_request
written by kirubanandh , February 18, 2009
Hi Anil,

I am using the FNDLOAD program in apps to download a value set .
I have actually created a pl/sql program and submitted the fndload program using fnd_request.submit_request.
The program completes successfully and the log file says the ldt file has been created,
But I have checked for the file in the corresponding location the file is not present.
I tried to create the ldt file using the standard method from unix box(ie from Putty) it is getting created .
It would be of a great help if you can suggest something on troubleshooting on this problem.
I have given the log file detail below.

Record Group is generationg error
written by ZIA , March 14, 2009
Dear Anil,

I am trying to customize the LOV of PAyments Window in Oracle Payables.

I have personalized this form by first using a built-in "Create Record Group from Query"
and then I have attached my Custom Record Group (XXCS_OBJECT_CODE_RG) to the standard LOV.
When I click "Apply Now" I receive the error:
"FRM-41826: Cannot replace group, columns don;t match LOV"

Initially I was using standard Record Group Query and put a condition in the end but it was also not running and
generating the error:
"FRM-40502: Unable to read list of Values"

Later on I decided to write my own custom query. Now I am getting the above mentioned error.

Need information about Balancing Segment value in R12

Hi Anil,

I am learning R12 GL ledger setups. I have doubt here. In R11i while setiing up Set of book we will just create one COA structure and attach it to SOB definition and this SOB will attached to Legal entity.

In R12 new feature has come that we can define legal entity while defining ledger itself.
The doubt that I have here is What is the significance of attaching Balancing Segment value at legal Entity Level and Legder level.

It will be very helpful if you provide me some inputs o this.
