Why do I need VMWare?
I wish work on SOA Suite i.e. BPEL Process Manager. Installation of BPEL Process Manager will install an Oracle Lite database too.
I didn't want to mess up my PC in case I configured BPEL wrongly.
Hence I had two options:-
a. To buy a new Desktop Machine
b. To create a new Windows XP Virtual Machine within my existing  Desktop machine.

I went for option (b). However you may decide to skip this step in case you are happy to Install Oracle products on your main OS.

Went to http://www.vmware.com/download/

Also downloaded "VMWare Viewer" and "VMWare Importer".

I then install VMWare Viewer and VMWare Importer on my main PC.

Once I did the above to installs, I realised that I first need to build a new Image[new virtual machine within my existing machine].

For all future references, I will call my existing Machine HOST, and Virtual Machine within it GUEST.

Hence, you may do the following :-

1. Download "VM Workstation" and install it.

It might prompt you to de-install the "VMWare Viewer", which you must do[as workstation comes pre-installed with Viewer]

2. Run the VM Workstation software, it will prompt you to change the Hard Disk Size for VM[Guest Machine].

I changed that to 20GB, and change the RAM for Guest to 740 MB approx.

I kept the name of the new VM to be "XP Machine 01"

3. Did NTFS Formatting of that 20GB space in QUICK mode.

4. Inserted the Windows XP CD  into drive.

5. VMWare installer then installed the virtual machine. It took 30minutes for the entire process to complete.

Uses following names/conventions

Name of the new Machine : dell

Comp name : dell

Password : xxxxxx

Made this computer a part of domain WORKGROUP

Next, I realised that I couldn't access internet from my GUEST PC. Did a bit of google search.

Next I went to "Virtual Network Settings" in the VMware Workstation Software.

And changed the VMNet host to "VMnet1" under the tab labelled NAT.

Hey presto!! my internet was now working from GUEST machine.

Here is how the new XP machine Looked like in VMWare.

Hi Anuj

In VM, you can create shared folders. Simply google for adding shared folder using VM Worstation.

By doing so, you do not have to physically download the file again onto your machine

Thanks ,
Anil

Hi,
oracle corp has come up with its own native oracle vmware called Oracle VM but the configuration and installation is little bit tedious.

Oracle VM is quite stable.
Oracle did not build their VM Product from scratch, they infact puchased some existing VM product from market and rebranded

Thanks

In case your "HOST" PC is running Windows and you don't feel like shelling out any money for virtualization software, I suggest taking a look at Microsoft Virtual PC 2007: www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc.
